Portrait of Sara Rich Merlo, Founder and Director
Founder & Director

Sara Rich Merlo

Award-winning educator and entrepreneur. Founder and CEO of Merlo Education Consulting, she draws on her expertise in curriculum, academic innovation and high-stakes writing to help clients define their program models and build the systems needed to bring them to life.

Prior to consulting, Merlo was Vice President of School Design at NewGlobe Education, where she shaped much of the company's academic core, from distilling foundational teaching skills to leading a multinational team of instructional designers.

Merlo spent the first decade of her career teaching history and language arts in the U.S., Europe, and Africa. During her four years living in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, she founded a teacher coaching nonprofit. Her work has continued to center on how we learn, teach, and make meaning of history, and how a deeper understanding of the past can shape the way people engage with their communities in the present.

Born and raised in Alexandria and educated in Virginia’s public schools, Sara earned a Bachelor’s in History and a Master’s in Teaching from the University of Virginia. After many years of globetrotting, she is proud to call Charlotte, North Carolina home. Her curiosity about the Queen City’s past deepened when she began wrestling with local neighborhood names like Providence Plantation and noticed how much history many people simply didn't know. That experience reminded her of the power of historical knowledge to shape how communities understand and feel about the places they call home, inspiring her to create Queen City Crossroads: The Charlotte History Podcast.
